A Writer's Life: Philippa answers the top questions she has been asked by readers across the country, from "when did you know you wanted to be a writer," to "who gets to choose the cover of your book," and everything in between. This presentation can be tailored to any of her books, audience size, and age. Children's Writing Workshops: Philippa's workshops for children are fun, interactive, and informative. Biography
Philippa Dowding is an award-winning children's author, whose book FIREFLY won the Governor General's Literary Award (2021) and the Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award (2022). She is also a poet, musician, and award-winning marketing copywriter. At university, Philippa studied English Language and Literature, first at Western University then at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Arts degree. Upon graduation she began a career in publishing at The Financial Post, then became Senior Copywriter and Creative Manager at Maclean Hunter and Rogers Publishing. Eventually, she struck out on her own as a freelance copywriter. Her many clients include magazine publishers, fundraisers, advertising agencies, NGOs, movie producers, website owners, and others. She has won industry awards for Macleans, Chatelaine, Zoomer, Today’s Parent, Canada's History and more. Philippa's poetry and short fiction has appeared in Taddle Creek, Middle Shelf Magazine, The Adirondack Review, The Literary Review of Canada, and other journals. Philippa has published 14 children's books to date, and has won dozens of shortlist nominations and commendations across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. These include six nominations to the coveted OLA Forest of Reading awards, five to the CCBC Best Books for Kids, plus inclusion in the prestigious White Ravens Catalogue from the International Children's Library (Munich), and more (see Awards and Nominations).
