Philippa Dowding has been nominated for top literary awards across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and presents regularly to children in libraries, schools, bookstores and at events across the country, to groups of 20 to 2000+.
Her presentations are lively, fun, interactive and have been endorsed by the Toronto Public Library.
There be Gargoyles Here! For younger audiences (grades 2-5), a discussion of gargoyles, medieval times, a reading from Philippa's award-winning Lost Gargoyle Series, and a chance to walk, talk, dance and even laugh like a gargoyle. Philippa will bring her guitar, to play The Gargoyle Shuffle.
A Writer's Life (all ages): a Q&A which brings together the top 10 questions Philippa has been asked by children across the country: from "when did you know you wanted to be a writer" to "who gets to choose the cover of your book" and everything in between. This presentation has been approved and promoted by the Toronto Public Library, and is tailored to your audience size and age.
Children's Writing Workshops:
Philippa has run several writing workshops for children with the Toronto Public Library, through the Sophie's Workshops program. Her 4-week sessions cover descriptive writing, characterization, book covers, bios and blurbs, and poetry. With lots of fun games, prompts and writing exercises, kids LOVE the program. Philippa Dowding wrote her first book when she was nine, and has written poetry and fiction ever since.
At university she studied English Language and Literature, first at the University of Western Ontario, then at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Arts degree, and began a career in publishing.
She worked as Senior Copywriter and Creative Manager for Rogers Publishing. In 2000, she struck out on her own as a freelance copywriter, a job she still enjoys. Her many clients include magazine publishers, fundraisers, advertising agencies, NGOs, movie producers, website owners and others.
She has won magazine awards for Macleans, Chatelaine, Zoomer, Today’s Parent, Canada's History and more. Her poetry and short fiction have appeared in Taddle Creek Magazine, Middle Shelf Magazine,The Adirondack Review, The Literary Review of Canada and other journals.
Her children's books have been nominated for the SYRCA Diamond Willow, OLA Silver Birch Express, Hackmatack, Co-operative Children's Book Centre, Red Cedar and Red Maple awards. In March 2013 her third children's book, The Gargoyle at the Gates, was named a White Raven book by the International Youth Library in Munich.
Philippa lives in Toronto with her family, where she sails, plays guitar, and walks her dog every day.
